Classic early 2000s Japanese horror
This is a movie from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who is not the Kurosawa everyone knows. This is the horror movie Kurosawa lol. I thought this movie was really unique. It's a story about ghosts who invade the mortal realm in very macabre ways. I also liked the depiction of the old days' internet. That early 2000s feeling of computers, websites, webcams, and connection as something mysterious and almost spiritual. The movie makes the internet feel like a cursed space, a place where loneliness leaks from one person to another until the world itself starts emptying out. I really liked that scene where the MC goes to a "haunted house" only to find a ghost lurking in the shadows. This ghost walks in a very uncanny manner, and such a simple scene has a nightmare feel. Overall, I thought Kairo was nightmarish, melancholic, and visually interesting. It is not always easy to follow, but the mood is so strong. recommend!
