Just watch the 70s or read the manga
The 70s manga | L32 & anime | L36 were iconic historical fiction, and their influence on shoujo and yuri is still felt today. I'd highly recommend checking them out instead.
I watched a little bit of this, as it has some of my favorite voice actors, and I was curious to see what they could even manage. The manga is 10 volumes, the 1970s anime is 40 episodes, the movie's runtime is 113 minutes. So it's best to go in expecting a 2 hour recap episode.
From the bit I watched, a lot of the story is basically sped through via montages over mediocre pop songs - and while some of the characters still feel compelling, the impact of any of the plot events is just totally lost, since there is no time to develop anyone or anything. As much as I Love ベルサイユのばら, I have trouble recommending this version to anyone.
