A movie portraying what was probably a harsh reality for many young girls, back in the Taishou and early Shouwa eras: arranged marriage after high school (sometimes lucky enough to be delayed by work for a few years). Anyway it was interesting to see, and the ending was very impactful. The pacing can be a bit slow at times.
The only copy I found is on YouTube with English subs. The audio is very rough (not the worst from this era), and the speech is very casual & fast. So it's both great and not so great from a language learning perspective. In terms of vocab, it's probably in the mid/upper L20s, if you can make out what they're saying.
I enjoyed it, and it's made me curious to check out other classic movies. My next one will be 花つみ日記, based off of 天国と舞妓 from 吉屋信子’s 小さき花. Update: I checked out 花つみ日記, and was really disappointed. This movie was much more enjoyable!
