Please beware: these books were written for adults back then not for children, even though they are probably mostly read by teens now, if at all (it depends a bit on whether you can tolerate his Christian missionary fervour and Europe centered prejudices), so grammar and vocab range are accordingly. Style is that of over a hundred years ago, you may find sentences that go over half of a page, like with Kafka’s Die Verwandlung. But this is not urban I.e. slice of life fantasy, but an adventure book, so more like Ende’s Momo or Die unendliche Geschichte. You could call it a light novel. All in all temporary level 22 is probably far from being correct.
