An accessible introduction to military jargon
I felt a sudden urge to read a militaristic story set in a fantasy/sci-fi setting with lots of orders and formal reports to N+1 commanders, and that manga scratches the itch perfectly.
The full-furigana and straightforward grammar patterns (at least from the point of view of a ~N3 learner) makes for a somewhat smooth introduction to the world of military expeditions and their long strings of uninterrupted kanjis (e.g. 地球奪還作戦、戦闘特化型の自動歩兵人形、衛生軌道基地、遠距離射撃、他)
It seems like the characters, who are all android — and female to boot, I wonder why…. —, start out intentionally simple and one-dimensional but there are hints that they will develop more personality as time goes on.
I've vaguely heard that the video game — that I never played — has a post-apocalyptic vibe and philosophical elements but after 310 pages, I haven't particularly noticed the presence of the same thing in the manga series. Sure, there are ruins and no to few living beings in sight, but it feels more like the scene of a battlefield than the scene of a post-apocalyptic world like in ウスズミの果て.
In any case, as someone who's interested in the NieR:Automata franchise and sci-fi military, I enjoyed reading ヨルハ真珠湾降下作戦.
