It's a fantasy story along the lines of what you might expect to find if you walked into any bookshop and browsed the fantasy section - you've got a girl who wants to be a knight, a magic school, dragons (obviously), a feuding and scheming monarchy, magical bloodlines..
It also has one of the flaws of many of these fantasy books: A very long, slow start where lots of information is dumped on the reader. It's even more egregious than usual, because it both just does a big infodump, and then has a literal lecture that goes over the same topic.
Now, the plot itself isn't going to be anything too surprising for anyone who has read a fantasy book before - but I think the characters do a good job of selling it, and while it's reasonably straightforward it's also not just one of those stories where the protagonists go from plot point A to B without facing adversity that isn't easily solved by bashing it over the head. It's more on the understated side than the high-drama side, but there's a lot of interpersonal tension and dilemmas that the characters need to work through.
Overall: Really liked it, but will need to read the second volume to see if it all pays off. So far, would recommend if you like fantasy as a genre, don't mind a slow start, and are up for a coming-of-age story.
Edit: I have now finished the second volume, and I did not especially enjoy the way the story developed.
Difficulty-wise: It has a lot of fantasy vocabulary, and especially at the beginning it can feel a bit much.
