Extraordinarily ordinary stories about middle aged men & their families
The book features 7 short stories of about 50 pages each. They very much are stand alones, sharing only by a common theme: middle age and the struggles that (may) come with it.
This is a book about family, friendship, dreams, expectations... For all that we follow along from the POV of a single man in each story, the people in their lives don't fall short either.
The only drama is of the everyday kind, there's no magical conclusion at the end; these are very ordinary, slow stories. Yet I found it to be a very satisfying read.
Language: The Japanese used is very accessible! It's very smooth to read and uses common language and phrases. No super rare grammar or people with over the top speaking styles and quirks. The only not common Japanese can be found in the last short story, 母帰る: It features a dialect
