A young woman flees to her grandfather's home in the countryside following some personal trouble during her life in the city. Together they spend their days fishing, cooking and making wind chimes as she decides what to do next with her life.
Ultimately this is one of those relaxed slice-of-life stories focussing on the healing power of food and good company. So hardly a unique tale within Japanese media, but it's certainly pleasant. I felt it started off a bit slow, there's a lot of cooking in this and the first 100 pages definitely had too much cooking, but once the interpersonal drama kicks in later it does get more compelling.
This isn't an especially difficult novel (high 20's maybe?), but I'd still say it's not great as a 'learning book'. The sheer amount of fishing and culinary vocabulary used here meant that a good chunk of my dictionary lookups where for words I'm unlikely to see again anytime soon, so unless you are specifically interested in those topics you'd be better off trying one of the many other novels at around this level that will probably lead to a more productive learning experience.
