This book has one of my favorite battles, with the 雷獣兄弟 siblings. It has a very raw quality, with the feeling that the characters could actually die at any moment (as opposed to later in the series, when they're more powerful and experienced). The second story is also really well done! Kagome is brave and quick thinking as ever, and it's beautiful how Inuyasha supports her, despite his misgivings about the danger she's putting herself in. The way they both behave in this story shows striking similarity between them, imo. It's also a rare moment where he actually understands and admit that something's entirely out of his league, taking a back seat.
In terms of adaptation, the anime is basically identical, except that it filled out the stuff w/ Manten and why he's so obsessed over his hair loss, in a way that gave it some deeper significance and meaning. The manga version stands fine on its own, but it's a nice touch in the adaptation.
