The second volume of Rayearth packs quite a lot into a pretty quick read. Since the origins are out of the way, there's more danger and action this volume, and while the action scenes have a lot less dialogue there's also more worldbuilding and lore which can be a bit trickier language-wise, so it evens out.

There's some solid character development, great gags, and new intrigues. Umi's freakout around the halfway point is particularly funny and a surprisingly psychological look at the main trio happens not too long after. The villains also have some twists of their own and the cliffhanger at the end of the volume certainly has some interesting developments.
