A Beautiful, Richly Characterized Love Story
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It's a romance set in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, following the story of Júbilo and Lucha.
It jumps between the past, showing various times in their marriage, and the present, which is from the perspective of their middle-aged daughter Lluvia, who is trying to uncover the reason for her parents' estrangement.
Esquivel's writing is gorgeous and astute, with careful, nuanced characterization. I was deeply invested in Júbilo and Lucha's love story, but also Esquivel's commentary on the things we leave unsaid, the things we truly want to say, and the marvellous power of words.
