This book has various sections with short stories (a few pages) about scientific facts in different categories: inventions, human body, plants, animals, earth, space, etc and two longer biographies (Marie Curie and Alfred Nobel).

Pros

  • you probably already know 80-90% of the facts, which means this is easier than other 2nd grade books in this series as you can guess the meaning of lots of words instead of looking up so much
  • some of the things I didn't know were really interesting! About the human body, bugs, animals, and some inventions. Or they had a nice way of illustrating something I already knew.
  • all kanji have furigana

Cons

  • lots of hiragana and only kanji for grades 1-2, I didn't mind for the biographies book in this series, but in retrospect I don't think it's worth reading more than one book at this level.
  • since as adults we'll know most of the facts, the book isn't that interesting. So as an early read to gain confidence it might be great, but having reached the ability to better understand Japanese, I was getting bored. I much preferred the biographies book in that regard as there was a more satisfying mix of known vs unknown info
