Everything's better with cats, including Dragon Quest parodies
I've only played three of the Dragon Quest games (3, 5, and 8) but immediately recognized this as a DQ spoof. Hero Ledo and party members Aina and Grace (names referenced from the press release of the upcoming English edition) have been tasked with defeating the Demon King, but the greatest threat to our hero's quest is not the Demon King himself, nor his minions, nor the need for gold and better equipment...but a persistent tomcat with a knack for demanding a warm lap and skritchies at the most inconvenient times.
Familiarity with Dragon Quest, or even console RPGs in general, isn't required to enjoy this, but you might get more out of it if you are. If you're interested in playing that series or genre of games in Japanese, this might be a good pick to develop or reinforce vocabulary; if more general fantasy media is your thing, there's still some overlap. It is a fairly easy read as well; I finished the whole volume in under 2 hours, which is quick for me.
The one concern I have is that, so far, it's mostly running on one joke which might or might not grow stale by the end. The series is complete at 4 volumes, so I'm willing to see whether or not it overstays its welcome.
Also, it has cats. Everything is better with cats, right?
Highly recommended.
