My first novel in Japanese
So, please take the rating with a grain of salt, I was happy that I could read it, and I liked it as I like the movie.
It is a picture book in the sense that about half of its contents are pictures. But the text is that of a real novel. The pictures are taken directly from the movie. The book is written by the movie's director. The target group are primary school children.
I could read the 100+ pages long story in about 12 days, iirc. And the other about 10 days I needed for the 2 pages long essay-like afterword, which explains why children like the movie, and why parents should let their children watch it. So you can guess which part is the easy one /s
[Disclaimer: it's not the first book I read in Japanese, there were some Yotsuba manga and short story collections for primary school children before it.]
