Fujisawa is my favourite historical novel author; this is a volume of short stories with no particular linking theme. These are generally classic Fujisawa in style and theme : the characters are not very high in the Edo period social hierarchy, the confines of the samurai clan are the characters’ universe, they struggle to do what they can while constrained by their social and physical situations, and things often don’t work out or end in a bittersweet way.
The final story in the collection was easily my favourite. There's an interaction between the viewpoint character (daughter of a samurai family) and her new husband, which I can't describe here because it's a massive plot spoiler, but it simultaneously is extremely funny, plot important, and clarifies both characters and their relationship, within the space of about a page -- wonderful.
Language wise, Fujisawa is neither the easiest nor the hardest historical fiction author. If you have a backing in the usual genre vocabulary and speech patterns he shouldn't present too many problems.
