The story is about a middle school girl who wakes up in 1945 wartime Japan after running away from home. She meets several wonderful people, some of whom are kamikaze pilots, but also experiences some of the horrors of war.
It was a bit of a struggle for me to read vocabulary/grammar wise, but the story was engaging enough for me to have patience with dictionary lookups.
I particularly found the perspective interesting since the main character is from the present. This was also the first time I've read something related to WWII told from a Japanese perspective.
I did find a few plot points to be a bit forced, like the epilogue, or just... odd, particularly the love between a 14 year old girl and a 20 year old guy. Nothing happens other than feelings being admitted, but it still does not sit quite well with me.
