One of Edogawa Ranpo's representative works. It was a very pleasant read and reminded me of when I read Sherlock Holmes many years ago. I only realized that one of the characters, like Holmes, was a reoccurring character in Edogawa's stories. However, from my experience, there's no problem reading it as a standalone work.
Given the age of the story, there are many older kanji used, however most of them do have furigana. Additionally, there were countless usages of 四字熟語, but many of them can be understood from the kanji alone.
