This book is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone. There's also a movie based on this book (it's awful - don't recommend) in addition to a TV series based on the general book series (it's...mediocre). My feelings on the TV/film adaptions aside, I really enjoyed this book. It was one of the first books I read in Japanese and while it hammered me with new vocabulary at the time, the grammar wasn't too tricky and I found it easy to follow along with. If you like books about murder and crime solving that aren't too heavy, this is a great choice in my opinion.
