This is the last of the 3 volumes.
It was… okay. Did this book need to be a 3 volume set spanning 1,100 pages? I’m really not sure it did. There are scenes that didn’t seem to have much going on, that went on for longer than they needed to. That’s been happening through all three books, actually, but by volume 3 it felt tiring. I think Kawakami might have a tendency to under-populate some of these scenes with details and twists. They can feel repetitive. Because of that, the big confrontation at the end fell somewhat flat for me. Even if this is a children’s book, I think there was room to put more variety and subtlety into the ending. However, it was nice to see how the characters grew throughout the story.
