Really good start to this series - will definitely be reading the rest.
From the cover you might think it's a shoujo historical fantasy type thing, but it's not at all. It's set in a backwater country on a low-tech planet, after wider interstellar civilisation has collapsed and rebuilt after an AI-induced apocalypse. The protagonist is a warrior monk of a religion based on Buddhism, focusing around Yakshi, a living goddess who is embodied in a young girl. The other main viewpoint character is a journalist from the rebuilt interstellar civilisation.
It reads like a fairly orthodox fantasy story in terms of the actual plot, but a lot of uncertainty has been set up that I'm expecting to have interesting resolution later on. Characters are solidly interesting, and the setting has a lot going on.
Difficulty-wise, it contains a lot of Buddhism-words, but is otherwise straightforward.
