ドラキュラの町で、二人は is a shoujo paranormal romance about a junior high girl named Shiori who witnesses what she fears may have been a murder — and the murderer is none other than her class's new transfer student, Ikaru. An uneasy bond forms between them when Shiori is bitten by a malevolent cat and gains strange new powers. The author Keiko Nagita also wrote the 70s shoujo manga Candy Candy (under the pen name Kyoko Mizuki).

The art style misled me into thinking this would be an easy little kid's book, but the writing style and content is aimed at tweens and younger teenagers, so it's a bit more challenging than, for example, the Magic Tree House books. Like all 青い鳥文庫 books, it has full furigana. Some of the more difficult sections are where characters explain how the paranormal things work because when interpreted literally, some of the ideas are so odd as to make you think you must be misunderstanding something, e.g. you become a zombie when a vampire cat steals your mole? the vampire cat is actually a VAMPIRE WATERMELON? This book is wild. But even more difficult than that are the torn papers inserted between chapters written by a mysterious author in a rather old-fashioned style; since you lack any context whatsoever they at first will seem unfathomable, so I recommend just skimming past them and going back and re-reading them once more of the story has been revealed — it's much less of a struggle that way.

The story itself is typical of the genre: the heroine is generically nice but exists primarily to get rescued, over and over again, by the aloof and crabby male love interest. While it doesn't get any points for originality in its protagonists, however, it does have a villain with the name Draculala, a vampire cat who is secretly a VAMPIRE WATERMELON, which is so delightfully stupid that I was perfectly happy to read this book all the way to the end.

If you're looking for something to read around the level of, say, 夜カフェ, but you'd prefer vampires and romance instead of cooking and crafts, this is one possibility, though I recommend you read it as if it were an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
