I'm actually surprised at how 'easy', for lack of a better term, the language in this is to read and understand. For the heaviness and starkness of the story, the fact that I am able to read it at my level and mostly understand it is a huge confidence booster; that something this weird and dark and oppressive is still mostly comprehensible feels good. I think a lot of it is the high school and familial setting, but perhaps more crucially that there isn't a lot of extended dialogue, jokes or wordplay; it's all very action-orientated (or setup orientated).
Now content-wise I can't say I actually like what's going on, but it is intriguing. I can't say I would have read this if the words weren't so easy, but I'm glad to have read it - if only for the language opportunities.
