Review of Genki 2nd Edition
(some of the criticism to the book may have been fixed in the new edition) A good beginner textbook. The chapters were relatively easy to follow along with, even as a self-studier and the dialogues were somewhat amusing at times. The longer texts in the back were especially useful and they were a good introduction to reading longer and more varied forms of text. I would prefer if the dialogues at the front of the book progressed a bit more and got even longer as you went through the chapters. The grammar explanations were overall pretty okay, but sometimes a bit clunky. The sentences to explain the grammar were sometimes made overcomplicated and used unnatural words, which made some grammar points harder to comprehend. However, the grammar explanations as a whole were fine. The book gave a good base for further studies of Japanese and I would recommend it for people who've got a good grasp at English.
