Despite mostly starring elementary and middle-graders, Non Non Biyori is probably among the harder stories of its ilk, partially because its humour is somewhat wordier than many other stories that have protagonists of this age, partially because the kids are real inaka kids who use a lot of slang and non-standard language, but mostly because the manga uses a variety of font sizes –some of which are near impossible to read since they're so bloody small, even (especially) with furigana. Still, I found the first two or three chapters a lot more difficult before it settled into a slightly more manageable groove.
The anime noticeably elevates this material quite a bit, though the core of it is still here.
