Content warnings: sexual assault, murder, suicide, animal death (lab rats)
This should have been so incredibly interesting. It's about medical research, a fraud scandal, social issues (primarily sexism in STEM), dysfunctional relationships, a murder-or-suicide plot, and so many good elements. But it just didn't do it for me. The story crept along slowly, the character development was heavy handed, and the dialogue stilted. Like how many times can multiple people talk about oceans of blood and bright, moonlit nights? I feel like that's not something people actually say in conversation.
Blurred for sensitive: The rape scene in particular felt unrealistic and kind of grossly handled by the author.
Audiobook had good narration mostly.
From a language learning perspective there is a nice breadth of vocab here spanning the topics above. There is also variety in how the chapters are written and the ways in which characters speak. If you just happen to have a copy, give it a go. It's good practice.
If you're reading for your own enjoyment, I hope you're not as disappointed as I was.
