Mediocre Isekai
Ni no Kuni is a jumbled mess of a film that has issues with its story, pacing and portrayal of events. The film suffers from problems with both showing and telling aspects. The basic premise of the story exists, but the problem is the characters are just fine with anything that happens, without question. Without spoiling anything for viewers, the very foundations of the story and actions of the characters are flimsy at best. It just doesn't make sense. The entire premise of the film collapses when you try to think critically about it.
For language learners, the film certainly isn't anything special. It is an interesting distraction, but I found myself having to pause multiple times on what amounted to monologues to make sure I didn't miss something established earlier (which I did not). The explanations of events are often childish in regard to the main characters and yet, I found myself at loss a few times with the speech. In the end, the basic premise of the film was repeated time and time again, so you can be sure that at least the theme will be called out time and time again.
