This book is the first book in the Japanese translation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I have to start this out by saying that the English version of this book is a lot better, and sadly this version has lost a lot of its charm in translation. That's not to say that it's not a worthwhile read, but I took off a star as I would have given the English an easy 5/5. This book is a strong start to the series, I'm sure a lot of people have read this series in English in their childhood so I won't explain more than that.

Language wise, it's quite difficult for a children's book. Although there is furigana over the first appearance of a word in the chapter, there is a lot of advanced vocabulary that may need to be looked up. Most of the time it can be assumed from context especially if you read the original version, but there are a lot of 4 character jukugo and the like that you would still want a solid definition of. Thankfully, like the original, there are a lot of instances where the author defines a term straight after using it, so you can learn a lot of new terms from this book without having to consult a dictionary. There is also a lot of repetition for the harder terms so it's pretty easy to get used to.
