Very objective; not fun to read but very educational.

I heard other installments of this series (all written by different authors) are a bit more narrative, while this is very much an objective piece of writing, with a lot of statistics, and constant 'translations' of place names among the different relevant European languages. It was not the most entertaining read. The only reason I gave it a second star is that I personally have an interest for the Baltic states, otherwise it would have had 1 star for entertainment.

Vocabulary wise it teaches you a lot of historical words, starting from medieval all the way to cold war vocabulary. It was very helpful for me, since this was still a big gap in my knowledge.
