Brilliant 👏

Story

This legal drama tells the story of an eccentric yet brilliant lawyer on a determined quest for redemption. As he defends clients accused of serious crimes, exposing layers of corruption and political maneuvering in the justice system, a deeper, more personal truth slowly comes to light: a haunting mistake from his past, and a relentless drive to seek justice but also atonement.

What’s truly masterful is how the show never hands you the full truth. Instead, it offers pieces of the puzzle, leaving you constantly guessing. That lingering sense of eerie mystery kept me hooked.

The show refuses to give easy answers. There are no pure heroes or villains here. Everyone operates in shades of grey, driven by their own ideas of justice or personal ambition. Just when you think you know who to root for, a revelation shakes your conviction. The recurring dilemma — "If you see a person about to kill your loved ones and have a knife in your hands, do you kill?" — perfectly encapsulates the moral tension the show never lets you escape.

The acting deserves special praise. Every word, every pause, every glance is delivered with such precision and weight that even simple conversations feel intense. The use of refined, respectful keigo adds another layer of seriousness and class, making every interaction feel dignified and sharply composed. Combined with the powerful background music — which elevates even quiet, dialogue-heavy scenes into moments of sheer epicness — the show feels as thrilling and gripping as any action series, without a single fight scene. That's honestly impressive.

The pacing is another positive point for the series. Across ten hours, the story flows naturally, giving every emotional beat and plot twist the time it needs to land without ever feeling sluggish. Each storyline, no matter how small it seems at first, eventually ties back into a grand, satisfying conclusion.

As if that wasn't enough, the show also delivers in the emotional department. It’s devastating to watch innocent people get caught in the crossfire of others’ ambition — crushed not by outright cruelty, but by a system where personal interests matter more than the truth. Seeing a man lose his family, his reputation, and more than a decade of his life because others cared more about winning than about justice was heartbreaking. There were moments where it was hard to hold back tears, especially witnessing how easily a life can be dismantled when the system stops seeing people and only sees results.

In short, this drama isn’t just good — it’s the kind of story that had me audibly saying, "Wow, I love this show," while I was still watching it. Definitely adding it to my favorites.

From a language learning standpoint, this drama is very interesting but challenging due to the sheer amount of dialogue and the nature of it.

The vocabulary is specialized around legal, political, and business contexts — expect frequent use of formal legal terms (e.g., 検察 (kensatsu, prosecution), 証拠 (shouko, evidence), 有罪 (yuuzai, guilty), 弾劾 (dangai, impeachment), etc.), as well as words related to government, justice, and politics. It's an excellent way to pick up this specific vocabulary field, but beginners may find themselves overwhelmed without subtitles or frequent pausing. Personally, I would have been lost without Japanese subtitles to help me out.

Furthermore, you're not given many visual context clues since the story is based around debates as is customary for the genre. However, they do show re-enactements of the events discussed so it is not as if there are zero context clues.

Pronunciation-wise, the actors speak in standard Japanese very clearly and deliberately, which is a huge plus. Because the acting emphasizes weight, pacing, and proper articulation, it's easier to catch individual words and phrases compared to more casual or slang-heavy dramas. There's very little slang or super colloquial speech, which makes it excellent for training formal listening comprehension.
