Imagine a typical Agatha Christie setting, a small island cut off by a storm, a sparsely populated tourist hotel, a murder, but instead of Poirot all that you have is the man used to portray Sherlock Holmes in the movies, Basil Rathbone.

I'd suggest hitting the amazon es link above and reading the short excerpt they have there as it gives a very good example of the tone and humor of the book. If you dig that, go for it; if you shrug, maybe not. I found it very funny.

But the murder is only half the story, the other half is Basil sitting around with his ad hoc Watson, a Spanish pulp fiction author, while discussing old movies and detective novels, and it seemed very clear to me in these sections how much Arturo Perez-Reverte loved them and how much fun he was having with this story. I enjoyed it immensely, but I also love sitting around talking about old movies, old detective novels, ... and Monica Vitti even if only in passing.
