NOT THE BEES
Troubled author allergic to wasps is trapped in a remote mountain home full of wasps.Kinda sounds like a fun Stephen King throwaway novel, kind of is exactly that.
From a language-learning perspective the challenge here comes from following all of the specific actions and movements of the protagonist through the house. The suspense and fun in this kind of novel does come from the "what would I do?" factor so being able to take in every factor becomes key (how is the basement door position in relation to the kitchen? How wide is the hallway?) so some sections I had to reread to get a clear mental picture.
The premise is fun but not exactly deep so it's great that the novel doesn't overstay it's welcome at a fairly short 190 pages. The mandatory twist I found quite satisfying and its one of those that has you rereading earlier sections for hints you might have missed.
Not as sprawling or ambitious as the other Kishi Yusuke novels I've read (新世界より、クリムゾン迷宮) but a fun read nonetheless.
