Unexpectedly shallow story but great for language learning

  • Entertainment: I loved また、同じ夢を見ていた by the same author, so maybe I expected too much, but there wasn't as much to this story as I was hoping. Except for a little twist towards the end, you know exactly how this book will play out already after the first 10 pages or so. I really expected there to be a little more depth, but maybe this book's target audience is younger than I thought. The male lead is also way more antisocial than your typical "Japanese high school loner"-main character and the story in general did not feel very realistic, which made it difficult to feel with the characters.

  • Language Learning: For someone at ~N2 this should be absolutely manageable. The sentences are slightly longer but the grammar is very easy. The first quarter of the book felt more difficult to me, but once you get used the the author's way of writing, it becomes surprisingly easy. The vocabulary is not for complete beginners, but at ~10K words in Anki this felt close to comfortable. There are several easy to understand metaphors. Don't read it as a complete beginner, but after ~15 easier books this felt just right.
