If you're on a mission to collect idioms and somewhat uncommon vocab, this may be worth it for you. If you want a good story I recommend something else.

The characters mostly fell flat for me and I didn't find myself liking or caring about the majority of them. The plot development was uneven, starting slow, suddenly throwing a bunch of murders at you, slowing down to a crawl again, and then giving a weak and ridiculous conclusion. If I hadn't been reading this with the Mystery Book Club I suspect I would have DNF'd it about halfway through. I've been trying to pinpoint what exactly rubbed me so wrong about this book and I think it comes to down how disjointed and uneven the story feels overall. It seems like the author started from the conclusion and worked backwards, which isn't necessarily bad, but they neglected to consider that the path to the conclusion matters just as much as the conclusion itself.

I think for a native or perhaps very high level second language speaker for whom reading this would present no/minimal effort it could probably be enjoyed as 'ok' fiction. For myself the prose was tiring to read at times and not giving me enough of value back in return for my effort.
