Similar to other graded readers: Not always the best in entertainment, but being able to read stories without being glued to a dictionary is a great feeling! And these were definitely better than my last graded reader experience. And the art that comes with the stories doesn't just help you understand, but it's also quite beautiful!

There are five stories included:

  • The Grateful Crane: 4/5 - a retelling of a classic tale. A little predictable, but still a fun read. And it feels like a complete story!
  • Prince Ushiwaka: 4/5 - kept me the most entertained, but the end felt more like the end of a chapter and less like the end of a story. I'd like more, please!
  • The Snow Queen: 2/5 - cuts off once it gets potentially interesting .
  • The Mystery of the Old Temple: 3/5 - quite atmospheric.
  • The Thunder Gate and a Cat: 1/5 - something mysterious happens, giving way to a pretty mundane story.
