I'm participating in my own reading challenge this year, and I began it with this book. I had heard a lot about it, so I was interested in trying it. I am huge fan of dark fantasy, a good story, interesting dialogue and characters, and thankfully, this book checked them all.
I will preface that it is a very visceral book, with graphic descriptions and a lot of gore. It is not for the faint of heart. But beneath all of that seems to be a developing story of learning who we are and how to survive in a world where seemingly all odds are against you.
I would place myself as an N2/N1 Japanese user, and this book gave me a run for my money. The prose is complicated, but flows wonderfully. The author uses a lot of uncommon words, but there is furigana to help out with the harder ones. It was easier to read around the 50% mark as the same words began to pop up more and more. Beautifully detailed expressions that really do a good job of painting the world the MC finds himself in, but not a lot of the vocabulary can be useful in day to day life.
I'd recommended this to N2/N1 level readers.
