This is a very heavy read, dealing with living in a difficult family situation. The writing style leans into lots of metaphors through detailed descriptions that give you a look into the main character's thoughts and perceptions. It was very depressing to read, and took me many short reading sessions to get all the way through. The author's way of getting you into the character's head through that flow-of-consiousness style is very engaging, which is probably the only reason I didn't drop the book halfway through.
Language-wise, this reads very similarly to 宇佐見りん's debut work 推し、燃ゆ, and the difficulty should be about the same. (Personally I enjoyed that one a lot more. I might also call that book a depressing story, but this one was another level for me.) Long descriptions and unusual metaphors had me rereading sentences pretty often, and there are plenty of unusual words (with no furigana) to look up.
Content Warnings: Depression, alcoholism, physical abuse, attempted sucide
