I was torn on whether to give this a 4 or 3. At first I found it a bit hard to follow and get into (especially keeping all the characters and names straight. I'd definitely recommend keeping track of the names carefully). But the thing that sold me on it is all the introspection, the fact that it deals with themes like being closeted, coming out, having feelings towards someone who's straight and uninterested (and all the accompanying crappiness that can come with that), etc. Similarly I didn't like the perspective character at the beginning, but found him to be surprisingly empathetic and thoughtful as the volume went on. And the slowly building subtext between the leads is great! The side characters are fine, and round the story out well enough.
Anyway I don't usually read this genre, but this book won me over in the end, and convinced me I want to keep going on to volume 2. So I've settled on 4 stars :)
