Fairy tale-esque
赤髪の白雪姫 follows a young, red-headed lady named 白雪. Despite her name, the world she lives in is a pretty standard kingdom: princes, bandits, herbalists, and the trouble she gets into is also of a very normal variety. That isn't to say that this book is any less because of it, but as of the first volume, any fairy tale references seem to mostly just be that.
白雪 is determined to walk her own path in life (as of now, becoming a royal apothecary), disregarding any interference from the people around her, well-meaning or otherwise. She's got a strong personality right off the bat, and the friends she makes along the way in volume 1 complement her well, I thought. Only a very general over-arching story is presented in volume 1, with the potential for more to be set up in later volumes.
There's an unrelated short story at the very end of the book, a different oneshot by the author, and I really, really enjoyed that one! It follows a young girl who strikes up a friendship with a young boy one summer, and follows them as their feelings take shape and they realize they'll have to part once the season ends.
There's full furigana throughout the book, and the language isn't too complicated; pretty standard fantasy kingdom stuff (sans magic). The short story is an easier read than the main part of the book, as it's focused on day-to-day events and feelings.
