The basic setup is a seishun romance between a boy and girl at a regional Japanese middle school, and things get worse/weird. There's not much else to say about the plot without giving spoilers - but it's one of those late-90s/early-00s stories that were full of this sort of ... upsetting, low-key, sci-fi happenings destroy daily-life type stuff. Definitely a trend at the time, and I'm a big fan (this is not a 5-star objective-masterpiece rating, just a this-really-tickled-my-personal-fancy one).
It's in the classic light novel format - very short paragraphs, lots of whitespace, direct and to the point. I think it's well written, and evocative while never dropping the tempo or simplicity. There are lots of slow parts of the story but it never felt like it dragged on. I found it very easy - maybe there's some slightly rarer vocabulary towards the end, but it's mostly everyday life stuff.
