Although this is nominally a spinoff series from the author's Tokyo Bandwagon series, there isn't actually any link or referencing of that series except the very minor point that one of the characters here shares a surname with the family in that series. So you can read this as a standalone Edo period historical story with a fantasy element, without missing out on anything.
I enjoyed reading this, and the author has a fairly easy to read style. I felt the plot seemed like it worked out a little too easily, and there was perhaps a little too much "people get together and talk about what they plan to do". So I'm not full-throatedly recommending it, but if you're looking for comparatively easier to read historical fiction to get into the genre it might be worth a look.
