Mixed feelings, later volumes get better
Disclaimer: a military school is not a setting I'm particularly into, and that is likely negatively impacting my opinion. There's also some very icky or uncomfortable dynamics (emotional abuse, and enabling behavior, non-consensual touching - though that one is infrequent). To the volume's credit, it doesn't try to play the emotional abuse off as cute. In the series' favor, some of the interactions (especially later on) felt a lot more substantive and concrete than a lot of other yuri series, and things aren't unnecessarily dragged out, nor do they feel particularly rushed.
The Meiji era, military school setting is utilized well. In general, I found the characters and scenarios believable (and sometimes enjoyable) enough, tho there's stuff that doesn't add up about the main character, and her family & background, that I'm hoping will be filled out in the next volume. The last chapter got me interested enough to continue on to volume 2, so we'll see how that goes. Update: it went very well! And so did the rest of the series
The language isn't too hard (certainly easier than most fantasy or sci-fi series), though the military-related vocab increases in volume in the last 2 chapters. Update: it gets more frequent, the further in the series you go - which I suppose is to be expected.
