Iwamoto is a student at an elite military school in the 1910s. The school has 3 sections: the research wing to provide background support for the military; the front line division for elite soldiers; and… the other section, for students whose use is unclear. Iwamoto’s orders are to investigate strange occurrences, and to recommend potentially interesting new students.
The characters and settings are beautifully drawn. And it’s not only detailed and lovely, it also always has a strong sense of compositional focus or movement as the scene calls for it. The more I look, the more I feel like the mangaka is a real master of his craft. This isn’t really the place to geek out about the art, though.
It’s a 少年 manga so there’s full furigana. Occasionally there are parts which are written as if they’re quotes from official documents, and they are written in the old style with a mix of kanji and katakana.
I really liked this first volume but it’s all I’ve read, so even if I give it a high rating that’s not necessarily an endorsement of the entire series…
