Fantasy light novel that feels unique in a genre oversaturated with Isekai
'Fantasy' + 'Light novel.' Two words that strike fear into the hearts of any well adjusted Japanese reader. When one hears these words, the image of a loser thrust into the role of chaddom by the whim of fate comes to mind. I'm happy to report that this book is not like that at all.
The bulk of this book is a series of interviews with the hero's party of adventurers some years after they have defeated the 大魔王. The aim of which is to discover who is responsible for the death of the hero as they were returning from their adventure. As a result of this style, the first half of this book has the air of a detective novel (albeit a weak example of one) however the main focus is on fleshing out the characters. Additionally, while the twists are not particularly ground breaking I would still call them satisfying.
This book does suffer from the 'look at the same thing from different perspectives' bloat that plagues many light novels, however I think this is comparatively minimal. It's only ever a couple of pages at the end some chapters.
All in all I would recommend this book. The writing style is easy to follow and because of the interview like structure, there are very few characters to have to keep track of in any given scene. While this book does use quite a bit of fantasy dialogue, on account of the standard 'hero party goes to kill the 大魔王' style plot you may already be familiar with them through JRPGs or other fantasy novels. There are no unparsabley long strings of kanji, there are relatively few place names and comparatively few proprietary magic terms to remember.
Finally, unlike many books I've read this book has a quite satisfying last two chapters. I recommend you read this if you want a light fantasy mystery with some well defined characters.
