I have mixed feelings on this.
The start is strong, but it doesn't really tell that story. It quickly pivots into a bog standard princesses-competing-to-win-the-throne plot. The whole middle section didn't do much for me at all. The end manages to pull things together and bring the tension up, but it still didn't really ring true and if felt like the author pulled their punches.
I'm a big fan of ancient-Japanish type settings, but this did feel a bit bland in terms of it being fantasy. Lots of potential, but eh - never really leaned in to it. Possibly if you're more here for the romance it would work better, but I didn't get much out of that.
Anyway, overall I'd say I liked it more than I disliked it, but at times I quite disliked it.
Difficultywise, I'd say it's reasonably straightforward, though it does have a decent amount of rare words and made-up words.
