I'm of two minds about Chi. On one hand it's incredibly cute (and in full colour), the story is very simple and straightforward, and it's pretty easy to understand generally (I think this might actually be the first manga I've read without going dictionary-for-every-line where I understood everything in a reasonable timeframe). On the other hand, Chi's consistent use of baby-talk is a major detriment (as with many child-focused books) to looking things up in an easy way, at least until you get someone else to explain it to you or just sound it out aloud until you sort of contextually understand what is going on. I don't know if I would recommend it as a very beginner manga, for that reason - maybe a few books in?
