I had to read this twice to really appreciate it. It has old kanji and old kana, and it's not written in a straight forward manner. There were also a handful of references I had to look up. That said, on my second read I enjoyed it a lot and found the story intriguing. There actually are cases of late life brain injury leading to unexpected brilliance (some savants, actually) so he wasn't totally off base with his expectations!
