Synopsis

In a world ruled by anthropophagous titans, Humans have been living behind fortified ramparts, which kept the giants at bay for 100 years. One fateful day, a colossal 50m tall titan appears literally out of nowhere and pierces a hole in the defense wall and lets in a swarm of titans into the city to cause chaos, before promptly disappearing into the ether. Mr. the protagonist sees the blood bath before his very eyes, and thinks to himself “dang, those titans sure are mean, we must kill them all!” (I'm paraphrasing a little). He joins the army and the epic quest to fight the titans and solve the many mysteries that shroud them begins.

Entertainment

Incredible entertainment value. The series is extremely popular for a reason. I strongly recommend watching this, if you have the level. The action is top-notch, and every episode has something new to offer. I felt very invested in the characters and their struggle against a seemingly unbeatable opponent. I also liked how SNK doesn't dip into comedy or fan service unlike other popular 少年 shows.

Anyways, this show has already received an ocean of reviews on other platforms like MAL, so I invite you to go there if you want a more detailed review of the entertainment aspect.

Language

As you might expect, a fantasy militaristic anime is not the same level of linguistic complexity as a high school rom-com, so I recommend achieving (upper) intermediate level before trying. A good knowledge of kanji will also prove very useful to guess the meaning of the many military compound terms. The amount of military-related vocab I mined from this is a bit ridiculous but it is not as bad as in 銀河英雄伝説. I don't expect to use all those new words in my active usage of the language any time soon so that's why I rated the language learning aspect 4★.

Grammar-wise, expect lots of typical action-少年 male slang and long-winded passive sentences. What I found way more challenging is how the old characters talk (e.g. 「わしは司令じゃのう」) and how the priests talk (e.g. 「今は汝の見るごこく」).

A nice thing is that with the episodes recap and whatnot, you get lots of repetition of the same words.

Example sentences:

  • 「他の兵団の志願者は解散したまえ」
  • 「長距離索敵陣形を頭にたたき込むことが主だった」
