Completely different from its precursor
Instead of a journalist and his friend in リング, we here have a coroner and his friend hunting to solve the mystery.
And as scientists they use scientific methods, most of the time, like autopsy, cryptography, electron microscopy, up to gene sequencing, etc. You will even find a list of which DNA base triplet corresponds to which amino acid inside of this book.
As in リング, you'll get horror only in homeopathic doses, so you definitely don’t have to read this book in bright daylight. It is more like a medical SF mystery and in this way completely different from its precursor, though in time line it‘s a direct successor.
Up until the last of its five sections I’d have given らせん 5 stars, then it gets a bit over the top with ideas, so that the book ended up at 4 stars like リング before. For me at the start there were many unknown words, but after the first section this went down for up to 30%.
I will for sure continue with the conclusion, ループ, of this trilogy.
