An interesting movie, but some of the plot is difficult to follow because of the narrative structure. The story comes together in the second half, but a lot of questions are left open to interpretation. The characters are seemingly shallow and just boring to watch.
For language learning, this movie is a good test, and it was perhaps a little above my comfort zone at the time of this review. The Mask Seller (お面屋) speaks strangely and at one point very childishly. The words and grammar were not particularly tough or fast, is just that more seems to be implied than spoken in parts. The main character in particular behaves very strangely, comes off as rough and a big point of the movie has overlapping voices which I could not pick out and follow from audio alone.
Lastly, the audio mix is rather poor, with the audio levels varying and at least several points in the movie being too loud, and then some dialogue being so soft as to be barely audible until it 'fades in' missing a sentence or two. This is a minor flaw, but when you are trying to pick up every word and you need to replay and change the volume several times throughout the movie it is a bit of an annoyance.
