This book had every opportunity to be good but just wasn't. The setup is cool - boy goes on the run after accidentally killing a cop. Humanity is split into two subspecies with normal humans being ruled over by the "superior", emotionless type. The protagonist joins up with a semiretired space criminal father-figure and they go and do crime and fight the power.
Sounds cool, but it's boring. Who wants to see the protagonists just win all the time? Once you realise it's a watch-the-heros-succeed type of story, all the tension evaporates. Maybe the characters feel like they're up against impossible odds, but I know nothing bad is going to happen so what's the point.
It was apparently originally published in the 70s and it shows - in theory a strong female character joins the gang, but in reality she's mostly just there to scream when action happens and be romance goals for the hero. After her introduction I don't think she takes a single useful action independently that furthers the plot.
The good is - it's a very easy book, and it's short. The target audience is definitely teenage boys, so if you're one of them you might get something out of it. Otherwise, probably give this a miss.
